Multicam Editing in FCPX

Hello Folks,

I hope you are doing well.

This post will quickly guide you on how to do Multicam Edit in FCPX.

There was a requirement for a Multicam Edit for a Project, where we were was also responsible for video shoot. In a beginning i was clear that i have to do Multicam edit, so we took a challenge and completed the shooting with three cameras.

I knew that it is required to shoot perfectly(without recording stop) in one of the camera, so we kept the centre camera ON, where continues recording get's started before the actual dance starts for each performances. And for other two camera's, they can stop and start the recording as and when required.
Now it was a time to start the Multicam Edit.
Our camera's were divided with three different angles so i created three different folder in Library and imported the clips accordingly.
After doing this i tried to search on google for how to begin as this was our first project on FCPX and i had no clue on how to begin on FCPX, we had done on Grass Valley Edius earlier but not on FCPX.

After doing lot of search on google, i was not able to understand on how to do it. I tried by my way.
Now i was required to work on Song one by one, which were recorded with three different Angles(Cameras). And centre camera was continuously ON for each song. So i started with picking up the first song. In the library browser, select the clip for the first song of the centre camera, and also clip of the other cameras recorded at that time for that particular song. You need to track the clips for each song. Now as we have selected all the clips for first song we just need to click on Multicam Clip.

As you click on Multicam Clip - It will ask for Clip and as well as how you want to synchronize!, Based on Clip Recording Timecode, Start of the First Clip, Content Created, First Market On an Angle. We kept as it is i.e. Automatic.
We checked the checkbox- Use audio for synchronization that means it will combine all the clips. Use audio for the synchronisation for the clips of three cameras. It's benefit is if there is a start/stop recording in any of the camera in between the song than also it will synchronise accurately based on the Audio Waveforms, and it's result is outstanding. We haven't found search feature in any other Editing Platforms.

As you select OK- It will take some time to synchronize, and after that it will create a new Multiclip Clip and it will appear in your Library Browser.

If in your library browser there are lot of clips than you just search with the name of the file that you gave while creating the Multiclip. Select the Multicam Clip, drag and drop it to timeline and double click on the Multiclip. It will display the accurate synchronise that FCPX has done for you. You no need to manually synchronize the timeframe for each second of your clip.

Now, I got confused on how to edit or how to mix the clip as per the requirement or song. As i move the cursor i was just able to scroll the clip of only one camera. What should i do for breaking the clip as and when needed. I googled but no didn't got the clear information. I tried pressing all the keys one after the other but none helped.

After hard trials got the solution. Go back from the Multiclip Sequence and just be at a place where single Multiclip file is present on the timeline. You can use the back arrow over the top left at Timeline Window in order to come out of the Multiclip sequence.

I got confused between Event Viewer Display-> Show Angles and Viewer Display -> Show Angles, when i googled, it's very confusing. I tried to understand by my own.

Event Viewer Display: is just like a preview window. It will only preview the different angles(camera tapes) in Preview window. You will not be able to edit with it. So select - Event Viewer Display -> Hide Angles.

We need the Viewer Display-> Show Angles: It will display the different angles in the display(output) Window.

Select Show Angles in Viewer Display.

You can also enable show angles in your display window directly:

It will show you the output of the three different camera(angles).

Now we can begin editing. Start playing the clip on the time line. It will play the clip of all angles at a time and then when you want to switch to next clip just press “1” or “2” or “3” and you can watch a cut in multiclip on your timeline. At the end you will get a single clip with all the clip switching that you wanted on you timeline.

It’s very easy and quick way to do Multiclip editing in FCPX.
